Delicate Doula Services by Dianna

Doula. Some of you may be asking, Doula? What is a Doula?
Doula is someone[1] who provides non-medical support to women and their families during labour and childbirth, and also the postpartum period.

Having a Doula at your birth means that you can be supported, comforted and have a birth that is satisfying for you.

In recent studies, it was shown that women who used a doula were more satisfied with their birth, had less medication and interventions, and were more successfull breastfeeding.

Gathering and analyzing the results of 15 studies, a team of researchers found that, compared to women laboring without a doula, women who labored with a doula were:

  • 26% less likely to have a cesarean section
  • 41% less likely to have a vacuum extractor or forceps delivery
  • 28% less likely to use pain medication or epidurals
  • 33% less likely to rate their birth experience negatively
(Hodnett E, Gates S, Hofmeyr G, Sakala C. Continuous support for women during childbirth. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2003. Issue 3. See DONA).

In another study, researchers found that women who were supported by doulas were more successful with breastfeeding on a flexible schedule at 6 weeks postpartum.

(see Hofmeyr, Nikodem, Wolman, Chalmers, and Kramer; 1991, South Africa. British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 98 (1991):756-764).

To sum it up, why would't anyone want a doula? Doulas provide that loving sisterly support that is vital to the well being of a new mother. We provide support that is caring, non-biased and non judgemental.
